The Detroit community came together on Saturday night, January 11, to celebrate another 2,229 kids receiving bikes in our city! It was a wonderful evening of camaraderie and delicious barbecue served up by Quentin of Sterling Old Style Barbecue. Well over 100 FB4K supporters gathered on a cold winter night in Corktown at the Piston Group facility to reflect on the 7th season of the Detroit chapter of Free Bikes 4 Kidz helping kids to pedal toward a happier, healthier childhood with a bicycle. The night’s top three honoree’s for most volunteer shifts were Frank Zain, Nino Pacini and Ken Koster; FB4K Detroit Executive Director, Bob Barnes, recognized them along with many other volunteers who signed up for 5 or more shifts over the course of the 9 1/2 week season this year. In total, 1,777 volunteers spent well over 7,600 hours helping to refurbish all those donated bikes and get them ready to be given away prior to the holidays – these were records for our chapter of Free Bikes 4 Kidz. Detroit showed up big for the kids in the community this year and we thank all of our volunteers from the bottom of our hearts – you are the lifeblood of our mission and you amaze us with your heartfelt dedication to helping kids. We look forward to another fun, inspiring season next fall filled with bikes and community – see you in September! And Go Lions!
